Today, August 1st, is the Swiss National Holiday (think of it as the 4th of July) and we are 734 years old. Some of the houses in Basel, where our headquarters are located, date back to the 13th century and people still live in them. That is good construction.

Switzerland is a direct democracy – one of few in the world. Greece was the first direct democracy. Direct democracy, or pure democracy, is a form of democracy in which the electorate directly decides on policy initiatives, without elected representatives as proxies, as opposed to the representative democracy model which occurs in the majority of established democracies. Direct democracy was not what the framers of the United States Constitution envisioned for the nation. They saw a danger in tyranny of the majority. As a result, they advocated a representative democracy in the form of a constitutional republic over a direct democracy.

Today also marks a new era of the US moving away from free trade and toward a system of tariffs targeted at different levels for different countries. Since our fabrication is in Greece and the Netherlands, we have a 15% tariff rate. The average price of our doors is now $45 more due to the new tariffs – it is not changing our world, or our amazing products.
