Before becoming President, Dwight D. Eisenhower was a five-star general and the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces during World War II, when he planned and supervised the June 1944 Allied invasion of Normandy, which led to the defeat of Nazi Germany. He became the 34th President of the United States and served from 1953 to 1961. During his presidency, he ended the open warfare of the Korean War, created the Interstate Highway System and NASA, and signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
